How much does a UX designer cost in India?
By Pranjal Agarwal · Published · Updated · 4 min read

A freelance UX designer in India typically costs anywhere from ₹15,000 for a small, focused piece of work to several lakh rupees for a full product with research. My own UX design projects start from ₹20,000, website design starts from ₹15,000, and social media management starts from ₹10,000 per month. The exact number depends on scope, research, the number of screens and how much support you need after handoff. Below I explain each of those factors so you can estimate your own project before you speak to anyone.
Why UX design prices vary so much
UX design prices vary because the word covers very different amounts of work. One client wants three screens tidied up before a launch next week. Another wants a new app designed from nothing, tested with real users, and documented so a development team can build it. Both are called UX design, but the second can be twenty times the effort of the first.
When you compare quotes, compare what is included rather than the headline number. A cheap quote that skips research often costs more later, because the developer builds the wrong thing and it has to be redesigned. A higher quote that includes interviews and a prototype often saves money overall.
The five factors that decide the cost
In my experience, almost every UX quote is shaped by the same five things. If you know where your project sits on each, you can predict the price range quite accurately.
- Number of screens or pages. A five screen onboarding flow is a very different job from a forty screen dashboard.
- Amount of research. Talking to five users adds a week of work but can change the whole direction of the product.
- Fidelity. Wireframes are faster than polished, high fidelity screens with every state designed.
- Design system. Building reusable components takes longer up front but speeds up every later feature.
- Support after handoff. Some clients want me available while developers build; others just need the files.
What my starting prices include
My UX design projects start from ₹20,000. At that level you can expect a short discovery call, a review of what exists today, user flows, wireframes and a set of polished screens for a focused feature or a small product. Larger projects with user interviews, a clickable prototype and a component library are quoted after a discovery call, because the scope needs to be agreed first.
Website design starts from ₹15,000 for a small business site, including page structure, content writing, design and build. Social media management starts from ₹10,000 per month for a planned calendar, designed posts and captions. I share these numbers openly because I would rather you know whether we are a fit before we spend time on a call.
Freelancer, agency or in-house: how the cost compares
An agency usually costs more than a freelancer because you are also paying for account managers, office space and a sales team. In return you may get a larger team and faster turnaround on very big projects. A freelancer is usually the better choice for startups, schools and small brands that need senior thinking without that overhead.
Hiring a full-time designer makes sense when you have a steady flow of design work every week. If your design needs come in bursts, such as a launch, a redesign or a new feature, a freelancer is often more cost effective because you only pay for the work you need.
How to keep your UX budget under control
The simplest way to control cost is to be clear about what you need first. Start with the most important user journey, such as signing up or making a booking, and design that properly. Once it works, extend the same patterns to the rest of the product.
Have one person on your side who can make decisions. Projects become expensive when feedback arrives from five people at different times and contradicts itself. A single decision maker keeps revision rounds within what was agreed.
Finally, share what you already know. Customer complaints, support emails, analytics and sales notes all reduce the research time I need, which lowers the overall cost.
Is cheaper UX design worth it?
Sometimes it is. If you need a quick visual refresh and the product already works for users, a smaller budget can be the right call. If you are building something new, or users are dropping off and you do not know why, investing in research usually pays for itself. You can see how research shaped the final product in my Wealthery fintech case study, where early interviews changed what we chose to design first.
