What does a social media manager actually do? And what it costs for small brands in India
By Pranjal Agarwal · Published · Updated · 4 min read

A social media manager plans, creates, publishes and looks after your brand's social accounts so they stay consistent and bring in real enquiries. For small brands in India, that usually means a monthly content calendar, designed posts and reels ideas, captions, scheduling, replies to comments and a short monthly report. My social media management starts from ₹10,000 per month. Here is what that work looks like in practice and how to decide what level you need.
Strategy: deciding what to post and why
The first job of a social media manager is strategy, not posting. I start every account with an audit: what has been posted, what performed well, what competitors are doing and who the audience really is. From there we agree on three to five content pillars, which are the recurring themes your account will talk about.
For a jewellery brand like Asian Gems, pillars might be craft, collections, customer moments and education about stones. For a school, they might be achievements, campus life, admissions and parent information. Pillars stop the account from becoming a random mix of posts.
Planning: the monthly content calendar
Once the strategy is set, I plan a full month of content in advance. The calendar lists every post, its format, its caption and the date it goes live. You review and approve it before anything is published.
Planning a month ahead means launches, festivals and events are never missed, and it removes the daily stress of deciding what to post today.
Creation: posts, carousels, stories and reels
Creation is the most visible part of the job. Depending on the plan, this includes:
- Designed single posts and carousels in your brand style
- Story sequences for announcements and behind the scenes
- Reels ideas, scripts and shot lists you can film on a phone
- Captions written in a consistent tone of voice
- Hashtag and keyword research for discovery
Community: replies, messages and enquiries
Social media is a conversation, so a good manager also looks after comments and direct messages. I reply to common questions, thank people who share your content and flag real enquiries to you quickly. For many small brands, this is where social media starts to pay for itself, because a fast reply turns a curious follower into a customer.
Reporting: what worked and what changes next
At the end of each month you get a short report covering reach, engagement, follower change and the posts that did best. More importantly, it says what we will change next month. Reports should lead to decisions, not just numbers.
What social media management costs for small brands in India
Prices in India vary widely. Some freelancers charge a few thousand rupees for posting only, while agencies can charge well over a lakh per month for a full team. My plans start from ₹10,000 per month for one platform with a planned calendar, designed posts and captions. The price goes up with more platforms, more posts per week, reels production or paid ads management.
When comparing quotes, check whether strategy, captions, community replies and reporting are included. A low price that only covers posting usually means you are still doing half the work yourself.
How to work well with a social media manager
The best results come when the brand and the manager work as a team. Share news early: a new product, an event, a festive offer or a customer story is all useful content, and it is much easier to plan when I hear about it two weeks ahead rather than the night before.
Send raw material often. Phone photos from your shop floor, a short clip of a product being packed or a screenshot of a happy customer message can become some of the strongest posts of the month. Polished studio shoots are lovely, but real moments usually connect better with small brand audiences.
Finally, give feedback on the plan, not after posting. Reviewing the monthly calendar in one sitting takes about thirty minutes and saves days of back and forth later. When approvals are quick, the account stays consistent, and consistency is what the algorithm and your audience both reward.
Do you need a social media manager?
You probably do if your account goes quiet for weeks, if you post without a plan, or if enquiries in your messages go unanswered. You may not yet if you are just starting and have very little to show. In that case, a one time strategy session and a set of templates can be a better first step.
